More updates: ("The" in "Legend of Zelda, The" to beginning, to complete consistency) The Legend of Zelda The Legend of Zelda II: The Adventure of Link The Legend of Zelda II: The Adventure of Link The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time The Legend of Zelda: Outlands ("." in "Bros.", which wasn't there before) Super Mario Bros. Super Mario Bros. 2 Super Mario Bros. 3 New Super Mario Bros. Yes, "The Legend of Zelda II: The Adventure of Link" is officially wrong (correct title is "Zelda II: The Adventure of Link"), but for consistency, I'd put it this way.

And guess what? It happened again (with BrandonE). I'm starting to think that I should blame myself for this. On the not-so-dark side, I helped uncover a bug in TASVideoAgent's reporting of game name changes, which was implemented very recently. It isn't ready yet though, so keep posting game name changes here.

A few days ago, I experimented with frame-blending on Mega Man X (same portion of the clip that Mister Epic used). I found both [67/33][33/67] and [67/33] to be too blurry for my liking, and [67/33][33/67] is jerky. Without accounting for any flicker effects, I found that somewhere between [75/25] and [83/17] was a better tradeoff between blur and 30Hz motion (for Mega Man X). Of course, trying to account for flicker goes against this. There really isn't any good solution I can think of. Note that Mega Man X uses 15Hz blinking for bosses; this explains the two-typed flicker even in TASBlend. I suppose you could counter this by using [67/33][50/50][33/67] or [33/67][50/50][67/33], but this will still result in two-typed flicker (though not as obvious) which has an even longer period (3 times as long as TASBlend), and the motion is only slightly less jerky and even more blurry. Or you could use [67/33][67/33][33/67][33/67]. But this isn't foolproof either.

A proof for analytic functions f, g, where f is locally positive except at c: Since f is not locally zero, f has finite order at c (smallest n for which f(n)(c) is not 0). If g does not have finite order at c, then g is locally zero, so lim(c) f^g=lim(c) f^0 = 1. So assume g has finite order at c. f^g=e^(g ln f) So consider g ln f. This is an indeterminate form since lim(c) g=0 and lim(c) ln f=-infinity (last one holds since lim(c) f=0 and f is locally positive). So it is an indeterminate form. Write g ln f as ln f / (1/g) and use l'Hôpital's rule: (ln f)' / (1/g)' = -f' g^2 / (f g') The orders of f and g (at c) are at least 1, since f(c)=g(c)=0. Let the order of f be m and the order of g be n. Then ord(f')=m-1, ord(g')=n-1, and ord(g^2)=2n. Then the order of -f' g^2 / (f g') at c is: (m-1)+2n-m-(n-1)=n>0 which means lim(c) -f' g^2 / (f g') = 0. So lim(c) f^g=lim(c) e^(g ln f)=e^0=1. The non-analytic case is a lot different though.

How about this instead: -1 = (-1)3 = (-1)6/2 = ((-1)6)1/2 = 11/2 = 1. (The task here is, of course, to tell which '=' is incorrect and why.)
xab=(xa)b is only valid in integral exponentiation (a, b integers, x not zero), in fractional exponentiation with fractions of odd denominators (a, b reduced fractions with odd denominators, x not zero) or in real exponentiation of positive integers (x>0, a, b real). Since (-1)6/2 = ((-1)6)1/2 does not satisfy any of these conditions, it is not valid.

http://tasvideos-moviefiles.googlecode.com/files/megaman_rng.zip This Lua file may be helpful. It indexes RNG values, so you know exactly how many times the game has called the RNG. It has two parts, "megaman_rng.lua" and "lookup.xyz". Snes9x 1.43 v17 and later is required (but there is a simple workaround for v16 and some others). Also works for Mega Man X1-6 as well as Mega Man 7 (edit the Lua file). The program checks the RNG value in memory, looks up the index in lookup.xyz, and determines the number of calls on the last frame as well as the RNG values called. The starting value 0xD37 has index 0. After it reaches 43533, it will go back to 0. The RNG works like this:
val <- (val*3)&0xFF00 + (((val*3)>>8)+val)&0x00FF
where val is a 16-bit integer. The period of the RNG is 43534. sparky, I think Astro Man battle could still be improved. I'll see if it is possible.

Sorry for the doublespeak that has occurred. The rejection message that was posted isn't quite accurate (Hourglass does support sound, just a matter of whether it can be dumped with the video and ensuring that the dump is in sync). That being said, Encoder Guidelines states that screen recorders such as Fraps are unacceptable because they cannot ensure that all frames are captured, as well as that the audio is in sync with the video. Using .kkapture is an exception for PCSX. It may be allowed as an exception here, if it works. If you believe that the process which created the above AVI (not the AVI itself) ensures both that all frames are captured, and that the audio is in sync with the video, or you believe that the rules should be changed in the special case of Windows, feel free to respectfully discuss the matter with a publisher or admin.

We already have a list for N64: http://tasvideos.org/N64Wishlist.html At any rate, the other lists would be much larger, so I don't recommend making them.

There's a wiki page with some information. http://tasvideos.org/InputFileEditing.html Please note that editing an earlier level may not work. That is, it may cause the later levels to desync. I am not aware of how the splicing function work in Gens.

I use Mitter to rip videos from Nicovideo. You can use the English-language affiliate http://www.niconico.com/ . If what I heard is correct, it will automatically create an account on the main site as well.

I'll address it now. I'd use the following two phrases: 情報や詳細はお訪ね下さい (for information and details, please visit (polite)) 詳細はhttp://TASVideos.org/ をお訪ね下さい (for details, please visit tasvideos.org (polite)) In the first case, it is clear what you are referring to, so there is no need to put このページ (this page) on it. Also, I think there is no need to say that tasvideos.org is an English-language website. This is clear. I would simply put 日本語フォーラムがあります (there is a Japanese-language forum). To avoid confusion from now on, I will post the whole script to use on the logo:
このTASのホームページは
HTTP://TASVIDEOS.ORG/
情報や詳細はお訪ね下さい
日本語フォーラムがあります
Mister Epicによってエンコード
Also, you could make your "Encoded by Mister Epic" smaller. It has no kanji in it, and we would prefer not to judge the size of an encoder's ego by the size of the name on the logo. (Except, we do anyway.) And the whole script on the last subtitle:
これはツールアシスト記録です
詳細はhttp://TASVideos.org/をお訪ね下さい

Mister Epic, You seem rather eager to start your debut on Nicovideo. I admire you for that. I hope you are not planning a third upload too soon, because I would like to comment. While the translation is much better than the first time, the two current translations of "for details, (please) go to TASVideos" have got to be changed now. Perhaps it is my fault for not making things clear before. I suppose you intend a phrase similar to one of the following: * "For details, you may visit TASVideos." * "If there are any issues/questions, you may visit TASVideos." * "For news/updates, you may visit TASVideos." May not be the exact wording in English, but that's the idea I believe you wish to portray. I'll try to address this as soon as possible.

Since the listed download links for the older (before 0.9.6) versions of DeSmuME are broken, and gocha is nowhere to be found, I'll post a few old versions I have: http://tasvideos-moviefiles.googlecode.com/files/DeSmuME_old.zip In particular, the svn2881 version of DeSmuME 0.9.4+ has the "Fix ARM Cycle Count" and the "Fast Fetch-Execute" stuff that allows you to play back movies such as Tetris DS.

I'll take some choice comments and translate them here.
* 1/4 00:01 ああ、海外のエンコーダーがニコニコに上げたのか Ah, foreign encoders have uploaded to Nicovideo?
* 1/4 00:02 製作者の名前も動画説明文に記載したほうがいいんじゃないかい It would be good to mention the author's name in the video description, wouldn't it?
This person expects the author's name to be in the description (something like "製作者: Vykan12" on a separate line) . I do not know if the person knows that the name is in the title or not.
* 1/4 00:03 08年の記録に負けてるってどうよ How? It loses to the 2008 movie.
This person does not know that the run is on hard mode.
1/4 00:04 ノーマルとハードの違いも考えず時間だけで判断するとかw Without considering the difference between normal and hard, it judges only the time, right? lol
This person thinks that the uploader didn't consider that the run was on hard mode.
1/4 00:12 題名に難易度を記したほうがわかりやすいと思う Displaying the difficulty in the title makes it easier to understand, I think.
This person states the obvious. Yeah, I forgot about it, but "hard mode" should be in the title. Just put ハード right after the time, so it looks like "【TAS】Vykan12より「ファイアーエムブレム聖魔の光石」のTAS 1:08:51.2 ハード (米国版) 1/4". Oh, and yes. Europe version is ヨーロッパ版 (yo-roppa han). Not that we'll be using it often.
Vykan12 wrote:
Edit: I translated the comments for part 3/4, and the first comment at 0:38 seems to imply the run is improvable??? "What to do - there are a variety of areas ... that could be updated. Dattara'm certainly doing that." Anyone know if this Dattara'm guy has a nico channel?
Who's this Dattara'm guy? Silly Google Translate.
3/4 00:38 いろいろ更新できそうな部分があるな~どうしようかな…。確実だったらやるんだけどな… It seems there are various improvements to parts and such to do... if it is true, it should be done.
Possibly implying that the run is improvable. Edit: Oh, and you guys know that you can copy Nicovideo comments, right? Just right click it and select the third one down (ends in コピーする). Edit 2/3:

Well, I certainly didn't expect Mister Epic to push this through right away. I was going to comment on the translation. I would have hoped that some more discussion had taken place. Title:
Vykan12の1:08:51.2でファイアーエムブレム 聖魔の光石(米国版)
What I've noticed is that Nicovideo uploaders of TASes prefer to be succinct. Normally, a succinct title would be like "[TAS] Fire Emblem: The Sacred Stones 1:08:51.2 (U ver.) (1/4)" and other information (author, rerecords) in the description. Of course this video doesn't have to be like that exactly, but I'm just pointing out how, in the case of TAS videos on Nicovideo, less is more. Though if you want to translate something like "Vykan12's Fire Emblem: The Sacred Stones TAS in 1:08:51.2", I think something like:
"[TAS]" [author]より[game]のTAS [time] [ver]
So the above would become "[TAS] Vykan12より「ファイアーエムブレム 聖魔の光石」のTAS 1:08:51.2 (米国版) (1/4)" より (yori) is more specific than の since it denotes that the TAS is "from" or "due to Vykan12" rather than just merely being "of Vykan12". As for the time 1:08:51.2, I believe it is perfectly understood just being there. What else would it mean? "1:08:51.2で" doesn't seem like the right way to phrase it either. Description:
ツールアシステッドスピードラン 投稿へのリンク : http://tasvideos.org/3214S.html
I think "TASVideos 投稿へのリンク: http://tasvideos.org/3214S.html" is the intended version. Or if you want to link to the publication: "TASVideos 出版物へのリンク: http://tasvideos.org/3214S.html" Note: I said earlier 転載 was publication. I was actually wrong. 出版物 (shuppanbutsu) is a publication. 転載 means "republication" and is the stuff that people do when they upload existing videos to a different place. Now the logo:
このTASのホームページは HTTP://TASVIDEOS.ORG
OK, I guess. A translation of "The homepage of this TAS is http://tasvideos.org/". Though I think there should be another slash at the end of tasvideos.org.
アップデートと詳しい情報はこのページに言って下さい
アップデート means update, but 詳しい情報 means detailed news? Though TASVideos never really expounded on what is meant by "details" or "more information". I'm not sure what you mean by 言って下さい. It means "please say". I think you meant to use 行って instead of 言って (both read itte), as in "please go to". In addition, tone is important in Japanese. Even more polite phrase is to write お行き下さい in place of 行って下さい. I don't know much about politeness or what is expected here, so maybe someone else can say. I'm not even sure "go" is the right word to use. "Visit", "drop by", etc. Remember that we're not requesting people to come; we're pointing out that users may drop by if they want to know more.
ウエブサイトは英語のみ 日本語版のフォーラムはあります
ウエブサイトは英語のみ says "Website is English only". Isn't that what you shouldn't say? Anyway, there are some logistical issues when bringing up the existence of the Japanese sub-forum. Note that it is well-off to the side, so anyone who doesn't click "Forum" will not know where to go. I'll leave this for now but remember that you're better off not saying this. Also, anything with kanji in it (those characters with lots of strokes) must be big! As it is, it is very small and appears smudged.
Mister Epicによってコードさ
I think "Mister Epicによってエンコード" is better, though I'm not sure. エンコード is "encode". コード just means "code". Also, I don't know where the さ came from. Subtitles:
ファイアーエムブレム 聖魔の光石 (米国版) 製作者: Vykan12
OK
時間: 1:08:51.19 追記回数: 34140
I think it is OK to use プレー時間, if you like.
これはツールアシステッドスピードラン
Note that to someone who doesn't know what "TAS" is, ツールアシステッドスピードラン doesn't really carry any more information. So it sounds redundant. Perhaps, you can put a meaning gloss afterword that explains what it is. It doesn't have to be long.
詳しくはhttp://TASVideos.org/ に言って見なさい
Same issue as the one above. 見なさい sounds even worse. I'll be discussing this further over the next few days. Just a reminder; please do not trust what online auto-translators give you.

I like your plan, Mister Epic. I should point out that in Nicovideo, there seems to be a standard form of terminology (for the most part) regarding TAS material. I'll go over it in detail. ---- * TAS, TAP, ツールアシストスピードラン ("Tool Assist Speedrun"), ツールアシステッドスピードラン ("Tool Assisted Speedrun") These are all terms for a tool-assisted superplay. "Tool Assisted Speedrun" is used on Nicopedia and Wikipedia, while some others use "Tool Assist Speedrun". * 製作者 (seisakusha) The usual term for the author(s) of a TAS. Used as follows: 製作者: FractalFusion * 時間 (jikan) The run's time. Usually not used since videos have the time pasted in the title with no descriptor. Times are either written, e.g. 1:23:45.67, or 1時間23分45.67秒. Note that 時間 here means "hours", not "time". * 追記 (tsuiki) Literally meaning "postscript", this means rerecords used in a TAS. The related term 追記回数 (tsuikikaisuu) means rerecord count. Rerecord counts are either given as 追記: xxxxx回 or 追記回数: xxxxx * TASVideosより転載 (TASVideos yori tensai) Means "publication from TASVideos". * 投稿 (toukou) Refers to a submission, contribution, or posting of any kind, including forum posts. Use this for "submission". * 海外版 (kaigaiban) A rather POV word for "overseas version" in common use within Japanse communities. I'd prefer 米国版 (beikokuban), or "US version". Words for Japanese version are 国内版 (kokunaiban) ("domestic version"), or 日本版 (nihonban) ("Japanese version"). ---- This is the terminology I'm aware of. There is probably more out there.

I haven't worked on this for a while. But I'll give an update anyway. I have essentially completed the first pass; that is, getting the bike in Eterna City. Note that as soon as you get the bike, the game forces you to go south from Eterna City by setting the warp point in Eterna City, and blocking off the west route. There isn't much else to talk about in the first pass, just using Chimchar/Monferno. Note that Monferno is powerful enough that a critical Mach Punch can knock out Mars's Purugly. The double battles are more interesting, with Monferno knocking out a Pachirisu with critical Hidden Power while Chansey knocks out Wurmple, and a similar thing for the dual Abra. However, the double battle with Team Galactic in Eterna City was bad, and it was better fighting them each alone. I'd like to plan a second pass, but I will need to figure out some more RNG mechanics. The second pass will use both Chimchar and Abra/Kadabra, where Abra will be caught just after battling the rival outside Jubilife City, and it will be given Hidden Power Steel. Steel is one type which is super effective against Roark's Pokemon, and neutral to just about anything else. Note that an attack which is super effective takes maybe a second longer than one which is neutral, and critical hit is shorter than super effective as well.

If you haven't noticed, I am currently going through name clean-up. This will take a few days. I've looked at the boxart for games where the GameFAQs name differs from the name here, then made a decision based on it. I also referred to a few Wikipedia articles. The main change is dash -> colon. Other changes are as follows: A Boy and His Blob -> Boy and His Blob, A Adventures of Bayou Billy -> Adventures of Bayou Billy, The Aladdin -> Aladdin, Disney's BS Kaizou Choujin Shubibinman Zero -> Kaizou Choujin Shubibinman Zero Battle of Olympus -> Battle of Olympus, The Castle of Illusion -> Castle of Illusion: Starring Mickey Mouse Castlevania - Nocturne in the Moonlight -> Castlevania: Symphony Of The Night Castlevania 2 – Simon's Quest -> Castlevania II: Simon's Quest Castlevania 3 – Dracula's Curse -> Castlevania III: Dracula's Curse Castlevania the Adventure -> Castlevania Adventure, The Chiki Chiki Machine Mou Race -> Wacky Races Choujin Sentai - Jetman -> Choujin Sentai Jetman Commander Keen 5 -> Commander Keen 5: The Armageddon Machine Daikatana -> Daikatana: John Romero's Digger - The Legend of the Lost City -> Digger Disney's Aladdin -> Aladdin, Disney's DoReMi Fantasy -> Do-Re-Mi Fantasy: Milon no Dokidoki Daibouken Note that I am only up to Donkey Kong Country. Also, the movies list page may not have updated the names yet. If you have any issues, feel free to post here.

What is that weapon used against web spider on the second fight?
Twin Slasher. X gets it from Slash Beast.

Are Colonel and Storm Owl the only bosses susceptible to multi-hits from the Nova Strike?
Web Spider is as well.

My favorite WTF moment was the spike walls not killing you in the final battle. Do they lose their instant kill properties that early?
The spike wall doesn't instant-kill, although it does a ton of damage. But I don't know as well why it doesn't damage X at that time.
