About This Game:

The Bugs Bunny Birthday Blowout, known in Japan as Happy Birthday Bugs (ハッピーバースディ・バックス?) and in Europe as The Bugs Bunny Blowout, is the title of a Kemco video game released for the Nintendo Entertainment System. The game is a sequel to the game titled The Bugs Bunny Crazy Castle released in the previous year.

About this TAS:

This is my first submission ever. Just like mklip2001, this game is also my childhood. So, I decided to make this TAS. I made this in much weeks and I know you've waited for an encode. But I'd submitted this earlier so somebody will encode this. Although this game is too laggy and very challenging. Challenging because there are many carrots to dodge so it can be prevented from playing a disgusting bonus rounds. I played bonus round three times. However I didn't get some bonuses because it can waste time.

About my Unfinished WIP:

On June 2010, I did my first WIP. However, it is only a Test WIP. Then, I made a next WIP that uses a Japan rom because of Japanese text. However, I gave up. And this year, I'd returned to redo this TAS by carrot prevention.

Level by Level Comments:

  • 1-1 - Easiest level ever. If you asked me why I took damage on spikes so I can dodge a carrot. I found a new route which is more optimized than just climbing a ladder.
  • 1-2 - In second area, there are two routes. The top and the bottom. I didn't compare between these two but I believe the top route is better. If you asked me why did I jumped earlier from a moving clock enemy so I can dodge a carrot. from below.
  • 1-3 - I found a new shortcut in this level. This is my first shortcut.
  • 1-4 - No comment
  • 2-1 - In Rabbit Season, I'd dodged at least one carrot and it didn't play a bonus round. Good thing I'd used an angle jump.
  • 2-2 - Once again, I didn't collect any carrots in this level.
  • 2-3 - Oh no! I'd totally got at least one carrot and played a bonus round. But check also the tornado flight. And in Rabbit Session, there are lots of block breaking just like in Level 3-4
  • 2-4 - I'd saved at least one carrot in this level. Thanks for quicksand route. Oh no! I have only one heart left.
  • 3-1 - I didn't get a carrot even one but check out also Bugs walking above the defeated clock enemy.
  • 3-2 - I'd saved a few carrots in this level. Oh no! I have only one health left.
  • 3-3 - I can't catch the moving platform just like in my Japan WIP. Oh no again! I have only one health left.
  • 3-4 - Just like in level 2-3, there's also a block smashing. But unlike in level 2-3, there's a frog which i need to kill because I can't smash with a hammer when Bugs takes damage.
  • 4-1 - Another bonus round playing in this level. If you ask me why I've decided to go to a pipe (or what object do you think?) below is because you can't reach for a moving platform.
  • 4-2 - In first area, I've compered between taking damage and waiting to dodging the waterfall but I believe taking damage is faster than dodging. In 3rd area, I don't know which is the optimal input when you are riding in vertical moving platform.
  • 4-3 - Check out the clock enemy sliding after I've hit with a hammer. And in Rabbit Season, I can't reach the carrot from an area where I've started, so I've landed in Rabbit Season platform.
  • 4-4 - In reaching the vertical moving platform, I've decided to collect a carrot so I can save time.
  • 5-1 - Well, I have no comment in this level. But in Rabbit Season, I found a shortcut by jumping through the Rabbit Season platform.
  • 5-2 - There are two routes in this level, which is top and bottom. I didn't compare these two routes but I believe that the bottom route is very optimized.
  • 5-3 - Another bonus round playing in this level. As you see, I didn't caught a second vine. So I'd took damage in spikes. In second area, I'd decided to take in top route, because you can't dodge carrots from below.
  • 5-4 - In the start, I'd took to the top route because the bottom route is the dead end, so you don't know where you can take. And in boss battle, you need to kill the chick first before Foghorn Leghorn was killed. And so I can catch a big carrot early, I'd stayed in the top route.
  • 6-1 - This one is challenging. Those conveyor belts make me slow.
  • 6-2 - Well, I've wanted to smash with hammer to face spikes to the right, but I can't, because I took damage, though.
  • 6-3 - I tried to get a shortcut in a clock areas but the problem is some carrots. So I can't do a carrot shortcut though.
  • 6-4 - This is the final level. This level is very challenging, specially to the final boss.

I've been watching this one in the forum for a while now. The run looks good - I just have one question, though - in 6-3 you jump at a conveyor belt, get hit by a clock, and then fall down to the spikes. Is there a reason why you didn't just go across the spikes? Anyway, the run looks good, and it's obvious that you've put a lot of work into this. Yes vote from me.

Man, I remember (and had a love-hate relationship with) this game. It has some of the flimsiest controls and worst graphics for a "major" title on the NES, but there was just something unique and imaginative about the level design which kept me coming back.

That said, I thought I remember Bugs being able to stand on at least some of the enemies, smack it with the hammer, and ride it as it goes flying forwards. That is actually slower than walking, though?

Given the huge amount of health that Bugs has, and how a "takes damage to save time" run ends up looking more like The Cheetamen, I wonder if a "no damage" run would be more appropriate ... probably more entertaining, at least.

Excellent job on Tweety, by the way.

Well, taking damage to the clock enemy because spikes can lose one heart of course.

Very nice! I'd seen everything except Stage 6 before, and you also handled that really well. Stage 6 has great music :-) Overall, great job with this game! For those who aren't familiar with it, Bhezt Rhy is making this game look quite a bit easier than it is. The game starts fairly simple, but after Stage 2 it starts getting quite hard. Here's some details that may be useful:
  • The bouncing ball things are invincible enemies that change color regularly. One color doesn't harm you, but the other does.
  • After taking damage, you can't swing your hammer until the invulnerability wears off. This is usually very annoying when fighting bosses.
  • Enemy health drops are not random. I believe the only enemy that leaves behind hearts is the orange floating head thing, and it always leaves a heart when killed.
  • When you have >= 10 carrots, you play a bonus game for extra lives, and you keep playing until you have < 10 carrots. (Each game costs 10 carrots.) That's why Bhezt Rhy tries to avoid carrots during the stages.
  • Whenever you fight Tweety, he keeps trying to retreat into hiding, where he can't be harmed. Bhezt Rhy does a great job at hitting him frequently so that he doesn't get to hide again.
  • At the boss of Stage 5-4, the big bird can't be hurt. You have to defeat the little bird to win the fight.
  • The final boss in 6-4 can only be damaged by hitting his footballs back at him. (They also look like pies, though...)
I'm quite happy to vote Yes. North Bus: I think sliding on an enemy is the same speed as walking, or slightly slower. Bhezt Rhy should comment on this, though.
Used to be a frequent submissions commenter. My new computer has had some issues running emulators, so I've been here more sporadically. Still haven't gotten around to actually TASing yet... I was going to improve Kid Dracula for GB. It seems I was beaten to it, though, with a recent awesome run by Hetfield90 and StarvinStruthers. (http://tasvideos.org/2928M.html.) Thanks to goofydylan8 for running Gargoyle's Quest 2 because I mentioned the game! (http://tasvideos.org/2001M.html) Thanks to feos and MESHUGGAH for taking up runs of Duck Tales 2 because of my old signature! Thanks also to Samsara for finishing a Treasure Master run. After 76425 Lag frames, the run is over. The ending is SO crappy. Who wrote this?! Also, Yes vote.

Meh Vote. Nicely optimized run, but the constant jitteryness of the camera makes this run painful for me to watch.

76425 Lag frames. Only no lag in the cutscene. I remember what Angry Video Game Nerd said. If this one walk smoothly just like Bugs Bunny Funny Castle,it would be better run.
Do the work.

Overall it looks like a well optimized run on a long and repetitive game. One thought on a possible improvement. It seems that you are able to take so much damage that there was no need to think about hp management. But the lag gets worse when you take damage. Did you consider that in some cases you could go a little out of your way to avoid damage and maybe come out ahead in overall time? Could you get less lag by killing more enemies? There might be some initial lag due to death animation but overall improvement. None of these probably make a big difference though.

Progress? Well, I have to re encode cause I uploaded the wrong file on YT and it gave me a greyscreen. My SD is done but I have to make a 512 one.

OK, look, it's been over a week since you claimed the encodes for a movie less than 30 minutes long. I need to know all of the following:
  • Did you dump the movie?
  • Did you encode the movie?
  • Are you currently uploading the movie?
  • When would the upload would be done?
Without answers to these, I'm going to have to add this to my queue. I make a point of publishing nearly the instant after a movie gets judged, and I won't let this stay in the queue forever, especially before April Fools when my queue will be enormous. Please update your status on this run. Optimized Screenshot:

Please, whenever you have ANY of the parts available, post them here. If you have an HD, and SD, and a torrent, I can publish. 512kb's are great, but they certainly don't need to be online at the time of publishing.
