Long story short, email below:
Subject: Google Video Hosted Content To Be Removed After May 13 Type: Embeded HTML/Text Dear Google Video User, Later this month, hosted video content on Google Video will no longer be available for playback. Google Video stopped taking uploads in May 2009 and now we’re removing the remaining hosted content. We've always maintained that the strength of Google Video is its ability to let people search videos from across the web, regardless of where those videos are hosted. And this move will enable us to focus on developing these technologies further to the benefit of searchers worldwide. On April 29, 2011, videos that have been uploaded to Google Video will no longer be available for playback. We’ve added a Download button to the video status page, so you can download any video content you want to save. If you don’t want to download your content, you don’t need to do anything. (The Download feature will be disabled after May 13, 2011.) We encourage you to move to your content to YouTube if you haven’t done so already. YouTube offers many video hosting options including the ability to share your videos privately or in an unlisted manner. To learn more go here. Here’s how to download your videos: Go to the Video Status page. To download a video to your computer, click the Download Video link located on the right side of each of your videos in the Actions column. Once a video has been downloaded, “Already Downloaded” will appear next to the Download Video link. If you have many videos on Google Video, you may need to use the paging controls located on the bottom right of the page to access them all. Please note: This download option will be available through May 13, 2011. Thank you for being a Google Video user. Sincerely, The Google Video Team © 2011 Google | 1600 Amphitheatre Parkway, Mountain View, CA 94043 Google is a trademark of Google Inc. All other company and product names may be trademarks of the respective companies with which they are associated. You have received this mandatory email service announcement to update you about important changes to Google Video and your Google Video account.
Recommended course of action: Shove everything onto YouTube.

Oh man, so all those videos are going to just disappear if their owners don't take care of them and upload them somewhere else? Yeah, I can only imagine how many good game play-throughs we're going to lose, for one thing. Just the other day I discovered that Slightly Magic has a walkthrough on Google Videos!

Let's split up, gang. I'll take everything after 351M, whereas nitrogenesis will do everything above that. If anyone else wants to volunteer, we'll split it up again. P.S. I'm sure glad I made the NoYoutube page now. :\ Edit: Oh, I thought this would allow anyone to download the videos for reuploading. Now I see you have to own the video first. In that case, I'm just going to encode as usual. Edit 2: My queue has several items from this list ready to go. Still frustrated over the fact that Google could have made this transition process easier, but at least this is an incentive to get some high quality encodes for these movies on YouTube.

Is there anything else that could be interesting to save from there that we didn't make? I've only just heard about Google Video closing down and there isn't much time, so other video owners might miss this completely.

Are you going to reupload any of these? I think it's probably okay to do so even if the authors are absent. In part because I don't think you can even see who uploaded the videos.

There are applications out there that let you download embedded videos like that, I know, so if you can view a video, you should be able to download it somehow.

By all means, contact video owners if you know any in order to save the videos, but I don't think it's a good idea to download their movies and upload them elsewhere without their permission. The only reason we can do what we're doing right now for TAS is that we are re-encoding them all.

If anybody wants to back things up from Google Video, you can also simply snatch the FLV link from any browser's developer toolbox. Google Chrome has this built-in (I think it's Ctrl+Shift+I to open it on Windows, Command+Option+I on OSX). Just go to the Network tab and sort by size, and then download the URL.

Um, aren't the videos there on Google Videos generated from our videos that are available via torrent or archive? Why not just take the one from there and put it on YouTube?

By the way, I'll gladly help out, since I have an uncapped Youtube account. Most (all?) of these videos seem to have an Internet Archive mirror, so I'll download the highest quality from there and upload that verbatim to Youtube. Would that be acceptable? I'm thinking 450 >= 1053. Minus 474 since Brandon has that on his queue. edit: downloading 450M, 474M, 506M from Archive.org. Will get 705M, 723M, 741M tomorrow. edit 2: since we're doing HD encodes now, I've settled on 450M, 741M, 1053M.

I don't know, right now I'm not really comfortable using my account to upload other people's work whole, at least without putting my own "spin" on it. Maybe I'll make my own walkthrough of a ZX Spectrum game like that!

450M (Chrono Trigger in 4:21) first pass turned out to be 17.34GB (that's without any upscaling at 60fps, in the lossless TSCC codec). Now I just need to cull it to 30fps, upscale it to 3584x2688, add subtitles with run information, and add a logo. edit: if I use this old logo (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lev39SBngTM) and clean it up a little, like putting in the correct text and URL and maybe increasing the font size, would that be an acceptable logo?

that old logo is too long, if you can make it 2 seconds, that'd acceptable

3584x2688? You only need 1536x1344, for YouTube.

I did the ones that I said I would do. If we have decided to upload the remainder from archive.org, then please do so. That said, I believe they are candidates for replacement, though of course they are low priority.

I was told that SNES videos should be upscaled to 3584x2688, ie (256*14)x(224*12), because otherwise there won't be an "original" quality setting. Could someone please confirm this? Also, I changed my logo, it's slightly over 2 seconds (2.7 according to VirtualDub; mostly because of the fade), is that okay or should I trim it down just a little more? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=izPG6Yh8Q6U

No. As soon as the height is greater than 1080p, it's "original".

I was uploading 741M and 1053M, but the Chrome tabs crashed overnight. Reuploading now through a different browser. They should be up soon. Chrono Trigger is just over halfway encoded. edit: 1053M http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z4y9SHcC43A 741M http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FXDyFTYadzg 450M edit: chrono trigger will be a bit later. it'll probably be done in a few days. My upload is the problem, for some reason my internet decided to start being awful all of a sudden, I can download things quickly but establishing the connection takes forever.

For the curious, there's been a followup.
Dear Google Video User, Last week we sent an email letting you know we would be ending playbacks of Google Videos on April 29 and providing instructions on how to download videos currently hosted on the platform. Since then we’ve received feedback from you about making the migration off of Google Video easier. We work every day to make sure you have a great user experience and should have done better. Based on your feedback, here’s what we’re doing to fix things. Google Video users can rest assured that they won't be losing any of their content and we are eliminating the April 29 deadline. We will be working to automatically migrate your Google Videos to YouTube. In the meantime, your videos hosted on Google Video will remain accessible on the web and existing links to Google Videos will remain accessible. If you want to migrate to YouTube now, here’s how you do it: We’ve created an “Upload Videos to YouTube” option on the Google Video status page. To do this, you’ll need to have a YouTube account associated with your Google Video account (you can create one here). Before doing this you should read YouTube’s Terms of Use and Copyright Policies. If you choose this option, we’ll do our best to ensure your existing Google Video links continue to function. If you’d prefer to download your videos from Google Video, that option is still available. As we said nearly two years ago, the team is now focused on tackling the tough challenge of video search. We want to thank the millions of people around the world who have taken the time to create and share videos on Google Video. We hope today's improvements will help ease your transition to another video hosting service. Thank you for being a Google Video user. Sincerely, Mark Dochtermann Google Video Team © 2011 Google 1600 Amphitheatre Parkway, Mountain View, CA 94043 Google is a trademark of Google Inc. Not really useful, since we're all going HD anyway. :D

That's strange, how would they automatically move all of their content over to Youtube when some of the accounts used to upload them are Google-only? Maybe those videos will be removed after all.

They explained that in the email. Edit: Oh. Never mind. That's not what they explained. That's a good question.

Now that they're no longer shutting down Google Videos, please restore links to all Google Videos. Edit: On second thought, look at Grunt's list on the previous page.
