I saved a bit of time both warp zones as well as in the first in third rooms of 8-4. Hopefully a decent enough run.

DrD2k9: Claiming for judging.
DrD2k9: Movie syncs on FCEUX 2.6.6 (when the Game Genie code is activated). Updating movie with a version properly truncated to the frame where Mario hits the axe, so that the submission shows the correct time.
DrD2k9: This was a somewhat interesting case to look into. Unfortunately, I can find very little on this specific Game Genie code other than a few sites that state that it allows Mario to "walk through things." This effect was also noted here.
Given the minimal information available about this specific code, I can only assume it's not one commonly known/used. In fact, the AISSON code (mentioned here) is a much more well known code for clipping through walls/objects. While these two codes modify different instructions of the ROM, these modifications are only a few instructions apart (which is why they likely have similar effects). FWIW, this run's input does not sync when using AISSON instead of EATSSY, and runs made for AISSON don't seem to sync when using EATSSY; so the codes seem to differ enough to make the two not directly equivalent.
Side note: some use the code AIISON vs. AISSON (these create identical changes to the ROM and are thus the same code).
That stated; given that both codes have the same basic effect on the game, I don't really see much value in having both separate runs as full publications on the site. It may be possible for a run using a wall-clipping Game Genie code to be accepted for publication at some point in the future; and if that happens, it will likely be one using a more well-known code like AISSON (that also happens to yield a faster run).
In our User Files, we currently have numerous runs that were made while using the AISSON code (some in conjunction with other codes); including at least one that uses only AISSON and is still faster than this submission. Therefore, Playground seems to be the ideal landing spot for this submission.

What does this Game Genie code do? What did you save time over exactly? Is this yours, is it faster? Please include in the submission comments

In order:
  1. It lets you walk through walls, although that's not super blatant in any encode since the SMB any% route doesn't have many walls to walk through that would save any time.
  • If the author did their due diligence, then this should save time over any other version of this run
  • At a guess, that youtube video you linked only looks faster because the automatic frame count via the site's parser doesn't stop at the last necessary input- this sort of thing is why I've been including "timing stops at x frame" in my last few TAS submissions, it stops this kind of confusion from happening.
So, something I want to point out before this run inevitably gets canceled/rejected for, well, using a Game Genie code: strictly speaking, a Game Genie code can act as a form of romhack, and just like Wii homebrews will often implement themselves via Gecko codes, it's entirely possible to convert a Game Genie code into an ordinary romhack with an IPS patch. While this run doesn't do anything particularly interesting to merit an exception, I do think that categorically banning Game Genie codes is a bit unwise given that it does allow for interesting possibilities beyond just basic cheating.

Game Genie isn’t categorically banned from the site, it’s banned from Standard Class publications. If a run using a game genie code garners enough entertainment value, it may be publishable in Alternative Class. Edit: Also we have this in the rules:
External codes are treated as ROM hacks if modifications are severe enough.
This modification via game genie likely wouldn’t qualify as severe enough to be considered a ROM hack.

Ah, fair, I completely forgot about alternative. And my misconception was based on a couple of posts I read from staff in response to Game Genie submissions saying, broadly, "no game genie." Good to know though, thanks for clarifying

I would still like the author to add info to the submission. Though no. 3 is clarified by the encode which is now linked. I don't believe there have been any SMB submissions with Game Genie codes since they were allowed for Alternative. This particular code seems similar to AISSON but less popular. The SMB1 category extensions have categories for AISSON, PIGOAP, STAGEO, and STAGEO Warpless. I think if any Game Genie branch was to be accepted it would be one of those first.
