Here's version 3, which was made possible by a huge shortcut in Toon Town suggested by nitsuja.
  • uses FCEU
  • aims for fastest time
  • uses death as a shortcut
  • manipulates luck
I redid the whole movie, and managed to hit the toon town tunnel 200 frames before my previous version. This time I don't have to stop when driving, because I got lucky with the toon patrol. The fight with Doom is better, and I don't think can get any better unless somehow someone can manage to start hitting him right as he is backed against the wall. That way he won't get out of range causing you to stop. (also, thanks to Rick for the spring shoes trick)

adelikat: Rejecting. This movie has gotten many poor comments and is rather dull to watch. The playing was good but seems it isn't enough to overcome the games lack of entertainment. I encourage the author to find a game more suitable for an entertaining TAS.

I know it's possible to give Doom one continuous beating, but I don't think it makes up for the time it takes to push him into the corner first. It does seem like the car handling could have a bit more precision to it, and since all the item positions are randomized it's possible there's a better arrangement of items somewhere, but I don't really have any major problems with this now.

Once again, the thing desynched for me after the Spring Shoes. I don't know why it's doing that on my end. Other than that, it's great. I really hope this one gets published so I can see the AVI and then bombard you with more praise. ^_^

There was a Who framed Roger Rabbit speedrun added on Speed Demos Archive today, it's 6m 5s long. I don't know if it's any help to you, but I'll link to it. Perhaps you can find some new tricks in it. http://speeddemosarchive.com/RogerRabbit.html

it looks interesting, was it made using a console? it looks like it runs a little faster than the emulator. The item layout looks good - the gag factory will and toon town wills are easy to get, its just that the will in the north takes a hike to get to. It seemed like the use of the dip cannon in this movie was faster than mine, but I was using it every other frame, so I dont know how that could be. One think worth trying might be to not use the first whistle and walk over to get benny, then use it later in toontown to bypass that first loop of road. I could also try to go and buy a second whistle in the store, but I don't know if either of those would make up for the time saved.

The run was made using a NES console, and was first recorded to VHS. After that it was converted to .avi format. You said it looked like it ran a little faster than the emulator? That's weird... I think that the run on Speed Demos Archive was made with the USA version of the game. Maybe someone who knows about emulation speeds can answer this, I know I can't :) You should look into the matter of using the dip cannon faster, perhaps using it every other frame is not the fastest way of doing it.

Looks like it is running at the same speed to me. I'm very surprised he was so lucky in the Judge Doom battle, he gets in about 70 consecutive punches which is extremely unlikely because Doom can decide to attack at any moment and punches do not interrupt his attacks. It's the same type of luck as never hitting a random enemy battle in Dragon Warrior. Besides that, it also looks like he would have ended up with a shorter time than you had he not checked the places that turned out to be empty. A long segment of the driving was while being chased, and he did also take that shortcut that I said was after the baseball and wasn't sure if it was faster than skipping the town before the baseball. Maybe you should try finding a better random item placement...

I probably mentioned this before, but once after a long session of playing Mega Man 3 on the console, I tried it on Famtasia at 100% speed, and the music sounded slower to me. So I turned up the speed by a few percent to make it seem more authentic.

yea, even though he was hit by doom, his power meter stayed full. the only way for it to go down is when you stop moving and start again. I'm pretty sure the shortcut I took in toontown is the fastest one, the one after the baseball isnt as big, at least with the item placement i had. I'm all for still trying to improve this run, but I feel that I've submitted it too many times and people will get tired of voting for it. Would it be better to post new ones in the discussion section?

If each submission is faster than the last one by more than a few frames then we probably won't mind. It doesn't seem like there are that many more times that this can be improved, although I could be wrong. If you're not sure, you can always post in the other topic and see if people think it's worth submitting, and submit it a few days later if there aren't any objections.

Personally, from what I've seen, if something gets submitted, then people will kinda come back to it at some point later on to make it faster, even if it's relatively obscure (See also: Atlantis no Nazo) I'd love to just see this published, then maybe there could be some major competition for this later on. Besides, I really wanna see an un-desynichifed version. =D

Rick: You are using Phil's patched FCEU to watch it, using 100% speed, not using fast-forward, using a not-too-old computer, playing the right movie file, and not assuming that he doesn't die, right? If so for all of those, then I still think the problem is your ROM. It is possible for a ROM to be different enough to cause a desync and yet not different enough to seem different or even have a different checksum. (Although that shouldn't happen with FCEU using MD5, I've seen it happen once or twice elsewhere.)

You are using Phil's patched FCEU to watch it, Yes indeed, nothing but the best. using 100% speed, Indeed. not using fast-forward, Haven't touched it. using a not-too-old computer, Laptop's only about a couple years old. playing the right movie file, Downloaded it right from the submission base. and not assuming that he doesn't die, right? He's supposed to "use death as shortcut" a few times in the movie.

Then, see the second part of my previous post. In my experience FCEU has been 100% reliable with this sort of thing, unlike other emulators like Snes9x and Gens where weird synchronization problems aren't uncommon, and I haven't heard of anyone else having this problem with it (any FCEU movies) either. That's the reason I'm so sure you must be doing something wrong or very unusual and that it's not just a random problem of the movie or emulator, in case you're wondering.

Only part which seemed to be that required some dexterity would be fight with Doom. Other than that it looked like it could be pulled with a real console with the exception of luck requiring parts with items placements. I didn't see any flaws in it, but the game itself doesn't give anything really which could make the run look cool as tool-assisted. I'm voting meh.

Fihlevin - one could say the same with theAxeman's Final Fantasy, that it takes no dexterity in gameplay whatsoever, but the amazing part is how much planning he put into it and how much time that saved on the run. I'm sure I put in nowhere near as much time into this as in theAxeman's FF, and haven't exhausted all the possibilities for item placements, but I did try out about 10 or so scenarios before deciding on this one. One I didn't try though was the Gag Factory will one, and I hope to get to that soon.

I coughed so hard taking a rip on my pipe because the fight with Doom was so funny with the punches. Movie was fun, especially the driving was cool. Yes from me.

I already voted YES for some earlier version of the movie, so this better version deserves the same vote. Quite funny to watch although I never played the game.

I watched Tom's speedrun for this game and it looked very boring... Im sure this submission is more entertaining, obviously due to the fact that its a tool-assisted-speedrun but I just pointed out my opinion.

Nice run. I remember playing this game back in the day and never being able to finish it. After trying on and off for about 4 years, who'da thought victory was only 5 minutes away :P Just out of curiosity, there are some places where you drive for a while where it looks like it would have been faster to get out and use the whistle. Are there a limited number of times you can use this item or is it unlimited? All in all though, very nice. Definite yes from me. Nice avatar too. I was actually thinking of running Princess Tomato, but menu driven games aren't always the most exciting to watch ... or are they :)

Yea, there are only 5 blows of the whistle (one used initially to get benny, three for shortcuts, and one when blowing the tunnel to toontown that can't be avoided), and to get more would mean buying them at the store, which I don't think is worth the time it would save in toontown. Actually I am halfway through a run of Princess Tomato now! I agree that it won't be very interesting to watch... i just am doing it because I like the game. So maybe I can get to working on improving this run after i'm done with that. I didn't start a thread on it since I figured nobody would want to see it, or that there aren't any secrets or glitches..

I wouldn't mind seeing that movie, tool, like I wouldn't mind seeing this movie published. =D I think it'd blow everyone's mind on how fast this game is beaten in, even with that other six-minute long one around.

This is just about as good as it gets, in my opinion. ._. I think there might be something in the Doom fight that could use improvement, and maybe something about calling Benny with the whistle, but otherwise, I think it all relys on the random item placement.

Death as shortcut? Is this faster? It looks like it slow you only down. Or will you land somewhere else or skip cutsequences? Can't see it here, that it save so much time. And drive into other cars looks too, that it slow you down. Can't it be avoided? So I wait what I vote when I get answers for this questions. Because I don't know the game, never play it.
