About the run

Alright, another dear game to me has been TASed. I loved playing this game when I was younger but I never managed to finish it. But thats a different story today. At first I tried using two players but for some reason, my keyboard wouldnt co-operate with me. After error1 confirmed my thought that using two players causes the enemies to have more HP, I concluded that it would be faster and less lag involved by using one player. That being the case, I am quite satisfied with how this run ended. In my opinion, killing bosses certainly didnt take that awfully long to deal with as one player. Initially, I thought lag and eliminating enemies & bosses would take forever using one player but I am glad I was more or less wrong (I am sure there are some instances where using two players is faster).
An important information about the game is that it uses checkpoints in each area. These checkpoints are obviously the enemies. Therefore you might notice and wonder "why didn't he kill that enemy faster?" Its because I don't have to worry about that, because I've already dealt with the checkpoint and can meanwhile have a bit fun by shanking nazis :)
Maybe a less important information is about the weaponry. Shotgun and Super Grenade seem to be strongest weapons, though I don't know for sure which one of them is the strongest (doesnt really matter much as I never had the difficulty of chosing between them in a mission as they never bumped into each other).
Mission 1 Nothing much to say about this mission, everything went pretty well.
Mission 2 I am extremely satisfied with how very quick I managed to destroy the boss. Didnt have to jump once.
MIssion 3 I sacrified a few frames by getting fat. This mission is much longer and harder compared with mission 1 and 2.
Mission 4 Ironically, I anticipated that with each level, it would get tougher but mission 4 was quite possibly the easiest stage of them all. Got fat again though this time I barely lost frames.
Mission 5 The hardest mission of them all. Soooooooooooo many minibosses. Don't know what to say other than I really utilized every weapon I could collect.
Mission 6 Final mission! I sat almost half a day trying to manipulate the aliens to give me a Shotgun but they wouldnt :( They gave me everyhing (= a chicken, letter, pig, Dropshot, Heavy machine gun, Lasergun, Enemy Chaser, Rocket Launcher) besides Shotgun or Super Grenade.
If you encounter a desync, replay it until it plays to the end. Oh and the ROM and the bios should probably have these filesizes to be able to play my movie: The ROM should be 27 826 bytes and the neogeo bios 1316 bytes.
Hope you enjoy!

Baxter: Replaced the submission file by a input file that stops after the last hit, instead of after the credits.

Baxter: There were a lot of responses that better goals could have been chosen for a TAS of this game, mainly suggesting that the TAS should be done on the hardest difficulty, and that it should be a 2-player TAS. The people suggesting this however added that they were really entertained by this TAS. There are two options: reject this TAS and wait for a new TAS which has different goals (this could take a very long time), or accept it and have a very enjoyable Metal Slug TAS on the site in the mean-time. The opinions in the discussion thread seem to agree on this; publish this movie. A new TAS of this game which plays on the hardest difficulty and uses 2 players will very likely obsolete this movie for having better goals, but for now we can all enjoy this highly entertaining TAS. Accepting.
ShinyDoofy: Processing...
flygon: Encoding, since ShinyDoofy is taking so long.
flygon: Replaced the screenshot with a far more entertaining one.

Loved this movie, but would you not save time from lag frames if you killed more of those things climbing around in the sewers? Looks to me that lag can be improved in many places?

The problem with those wall-crawling sewer things is that their deaths are even more laggy than just them crawling around.

Man. I replayed this today and it is mean. Way more quarter-thirsty than Metal Slug 2 is, and I'm not convinced the changes are for the better. For example, the penultimate boss in 2 is a callback to the final boss in 1...but the penultimate boss in X basically just summons four saucers to pin you with laser fire and then occasionally decides to fry you with its supergun. I'm also convinced that most of the enemies have had significantly boosted hitpoints, since my instinctual grenade throw counts were consistently low. In short, while I could beat 2 for about two dollars, X took $4.50. Still makes a better TAS than 2 would, though.

Easy Yes. I still would like to see, as others have mentioned, somewhat different goals one day, superplay rather than speedrun so to speak... But this was a great run regardless, and a lesson to me at least, not to dismiss runs based of goals alone.

I was entertained. I also had no idea the bosses could be beaten so quickly. Yes vote :3

It has finally been submitted! This movie was teh good! But 2-players would be teh awesome! Everything looked optimized well. Mission 5 looked kinda strange though. : / The lag seemed more like an emulation bug rather than game lag. If you look at GuanoBowl's run, there seems to be less lag at the parts where you lagged. Like at the beginning of Mission 1.

Thanks for uploading, adelikat. It's great, but I believe I can make it faster using one player. I have problems finding the ROM........

I suppose there are lots of improvements, I can't describe them well in English. There are ways to shoot/slash/throw grenades quicker you know...

Happy vs Anger :P Hehe I am sure you can do a lot of cool and good stuff in your run. I gave my best, I pressed the fire button whenever it was possible, finding best positions etc but newcomers like you always find new and extraordinary ways of being faster, which is absolutely and positively important to keep pushing the limits. I look forward to your run! Cheers ^_^

As a few others pointed out earlier, I think the Metal Slug series is more entertaining to watch for a 2P run. It's more fun to watch for maximum kill/damage (or some other tasks that equates to doing a 100% run) instead of speed. With that aside, this 1P run is still entertaining to watch. I am voting yes to this run. I didn't encounter any desync problems. I assume it's related to the ROM being used. Here are the step I've taken to verify the ROMs: 1. export the ROM info to a dat file to be used by cmpro. 2. rebuild the ROMs using cmpro (just dropped the ROMs from MAME and let cmpro do the rest)

If there are improvements as HappyLee says, and if a 2 player run would be better... why publish this? Aside from that, I did not find the run to be that entertaining. I watched like 7-8 minutes and stopped. I guess it's just that I never played metal slug, nor do I enjoy watching Contra-style TASes. No vote from me. But Angerfist you're still cool for having the most pulsating fist ever.

Publish this because it entertains many people, it'll be months before another run is done, and that run would probably be categorized differently anyway (compare 1p vs. 2p runs for other run&gun games). I am curious as to the nature of the improvements that HappyLee is talking about, though.

just because a game isn't 100% optimized shouldn't disqualify it for publication. For example the old mm2 or smb3 runs where dam good and certainly good enough for publication, it's just not as good as the current runs. As for improvements I did a 2 player of the first level so I know you can get off the parachute earlier. Also some weapons shoot faster crouched, idk if this would have made the second boss quicker. But unless you notice it and it looks sloppy to you I don't see why it would factor in to the entertainment value.

Congratz Angerfist. I love your TAS. VEEEEEEERY well played. Probably it's improvable. Sure, cause it's the first MS TAS. But deserves so far to be published. Easy YES vote.

This run entertained me from the beginning to the end (synced for me). This movie needs to be published because of the high entertainment level. I love your TAS.

I find this game to be a pushover at the normal difficulty. I wasn't that impressed that it wasn't beaten on the hardest level of difficulty, the bosses died too quickly.

They're only seperate when the 1p run is faster.

For future runs, it should be noted that for some reason, the US version of this game was censored; that's supposed to be blood flying from those soldiers, not puffs of sweat or whatever. I know it's purely a cosmetic thing that doesn't really affect anything, but still. Anyway, nice run!

ShinyDoofy is taking forever to encode this, but FBA keeps desyncing (The 2nd attempt in dumping the AVI got further, the 3rd attempt crashed FBA). Looks like a great movie though, so Yes vote, no matter how unneeded it is.
