This would be a great game to do a speed run on, I just did a pretty bad run of the first stage, I'd link it but I don't know how. (edit - I was drunk and the tas was trash, I would have never linked to it) I would really like to see someone give this game a try, I don't have the time or patience to do speed runs but I like to watch them a lot. (this was true) If anyone is intrested in watching my poorly made first stage they can E-mail me at **********, at least you can kind of get a feel for what the game is like and ideas on stuff you can do. (you only would have learned what it looked like to watch a drunk playing this game at 3% speed) EDIT - Took my e-mail address out, I did that over 5 years ago. I no longer have a copy of that drunken first and only tas I made. drokly.

You might want to try http://dehacked.2y.net/microstorage.php if you want to upload files. Also, I don't know about TASing this game, it might be cool though. Also, how does playing with 2 players at once affect the game?

I believe playing with 2 players at once adds more enemies, and bosses would take longer to kill. I could be wrong, though. I've never played Pocky & Rocky with 2 players before.

I did... and its hard. I accually started a run of this game back in 2004 ;) as a request from Walker Boh. Its a nice game. But I never completed it.(As alot of other runs that I start) Pocky And Rocky. I belive that is was 2 different (u) roms for this game. If using wrong it will desync at the graveyard... but.. I think that the biggest problem with the dash is that you will try to aviod to "bump" into each other. Maybe I restart the run after PSVI. Its a fun game though :)

Doesn't seems to work with "Pocky & Rocky (U) [!]" (CRC32=2B0E7EA3).

I don't know what could be done to make the levels more interesting. Aiming for fastest time, there's not much choice of anything except dashing constantly in as straight a line as possible and killing the minimum enemies necessary to prevent lag, and rebounding off of the other player at some places. A "100% kills" goal might not work very well (some enemies just keep appearing or take many hits to kill), but it could be worth trying. That WIP would have to be restarted anyway because I didn't/couldn't luck manipulate a green special attack from the frog.

You must not have a new enough emulator version (and/or not be using the right settings). Try using something from this post.

Oh no the 2nd level is supposed to be screwed up; I didn't TAS that level. I didn't notice you only said the 2nd level desynced.

I'd say this game a hell to speedrun. Many things on screen, the dive-function and also the collision-dive that has to be utillised. But I agree that a TAS of this game would be awsome.
Bein' away for like five years, and not a single new post in the ZSNES forum... :'-(

There is this run, but it was deservedly rejected.

Nice language. We do not discourage people from trying to TAS a game, if you wanna see this game TASed that badly, you could try to do it. We'll even encourage you!

Hi, there! I plan on making a TAS of Pocky & Rocky, but since I'm a beginner, I didn't want to make a topic in the main SNES forum. My goal is to make a 2-player speed run of Pocky & Rocky that is faster than Nightcom's rejected attempt (which comes in at around 24 minutes). Below are some notes on the process I plan on using.
  • Watch Nightcom's run, make notes on his route
  • Play through Pocky & Rocky, finding out the following things:
    • Is the route Nightcom takes the fastest route?
    • Are there any glitches when I press two directions at once? When I pause in the middle of a shot?
    • Is it worth trading off time to get the power-ups? (I have a feeling that obtaining the weaponry power-ups will be worth it, while obtaining the health power ups will, of course, not be worth it.)
    • What is in each treasure chest?
    • If power-ups are worthwhile, how many keys will I need?
    • Where are the shops? How much money will I need to buy keys/power ups?
    • Does Pocky or Rocky's speed vary much? If so, can I find the speed value in the memory viewer?
    • Are there pauses where input is accepted? If so, what can I do to fill in the blanks? What are some entertaining-looking things that Pocky and Rocky could do without wasting time?
That's all I can think of for pre-running work. Is there anything else I should be considering? (Assuming, of course, that I practice using the record feature on the emulator while I do the playthrough of the game.) I'd like to know if this is an appropriate process for a first-time speed runner to use. Thanks, guys!

I think this is exactly what everyone should do when TASing games. TASing is basically just testing everything and then executing the fastest found method. If you're able to do everything you listed in your post and you know how to use tools for your advantage, I'm sure you'll do fine. Good luck on your run! I like Pocky & Rocky, so be sure to post WIPs. Others can then comment on them and see if they notice possible improvements. PS. There might be a Pocky & Rocky thread in the SNES section of this forum. Be sure to use the search function to find if there's one and read through the thread for possible tips and other useful stuff. EDIT: I found an existing thread here: http://tasvideos.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=3796

Is anybody working on this? I was wondering if I could give it a shot since this is rather short.

I would definitely be interested in a TAS of this game. Here are some RAM addresses from my vault of RAM addresses:
00000	7E0062	w	u	0	P1 X pos
00001	7E00A2	w	u	0	P2 X pos
00002	7E0064	w	u	0	P1 Y pos
00003	7E007E	w	u	0	P2 Y pos
00004	7E0022	b	u	0	Scr Y pos
00005	7E00E6	b	u	0	P1 Weapon
00006	7E1F18	w	u	0	Boss HP

I was just testing out sliding to see if there was a pattern when I encountered something odd. http://dehacked.2y.net/microstorage.php/info/156200300/Pocky%20%26%20Rocky%20TAS.smv If I can get this to go at a straight line, then I could save tremendous amounts of time.

I forgot I had ever made an account on here. It was weird to see my old username and a post I made on the front page of the SNES forums. So, it's been about 5 1/2 years I think. One day someone will make this tas... one day.

Unfourtuantely, I wont be able to work on this or any TAS for the matter since ive been swamped with schoolwork as well as me getting back into doing work for SDA. Sorry D_Rok. :( Also, I absolutely hate snes9x with a passion.
