Really impressive TAS. Love all the damage boosting, camera trickery, and other shenanigans. I doubt this movie would make it to publication for this year but would imagine it would easily be an award contender for next year.

For the record, the English version of the game was dumped a few days ago. The English is just about what you'd expect. That being said, I currently do not have plans to resync this movie. If anybody else wants to take it up, feel free.

I've disabled the module on the page - since it's a legacy module on a legacy page anyway, no sense in updating or maintaining it.

Thanks for your response. But I have another question: Let's say I have ACE(although it is fanciful to assume that, like you said). Then am I allowed to manipulate the screen in such a way that it would look identical to the princess's speech in 8-4, without continuously mashing buttons without "actually beating the game" and call that the game's end screen?
Yes. By the point you have this level of full ACE control over a video game (hypothetically), you can do essentially anything you want, so conjuring up a custom ending screen is fair game. Per the movie rules:
• Playarounds making use of arbitrary code must still appear to complete the game, showing the end credits or ending screen at the end. ◦ Replacing the end credits or ending screen with your own is allowed as long as it appears to fit the game.

Is there anyone there who's planning to complete the improvement to this submission?
No. None of us (who worked on the game/this improvement) are even confident that this improvement doesn't get eaten up by lag in later stages, anyway.

Can anyone explain exactly why "no World 5" is a category for this game? What makes World 5 outstanding in particular, and why should a run skip it?

For reference, all submissions and publications of GB movies that had their system labeled as GBC have now been set back to GB. This fixes the issue where GB-in-GBC movies couldn't be found in the GB movie listing as they were supposed to be. For now, new submissions of GB-in-GBC games in BizHawk need to have their system IDs manually updated by senior staff, until BizHawk updates allow a good way to discern GB games and GBC games in the .bk2 header.

I was senior judge at the time, and senior judge had the final call on movie rules. This was well established at the time. Yes, other seniors and admins were usually involved in major rule change discussions, but never has it been required that every admin partake in the discussion, or each of them to sign off on it.

In the past 5 years, we've had many discussions between admins and judges regarding changes to the rules. I don't recall seeing any discussion about anything Mothrayas did here, at least not in the usual staff places. So I don't think anything about those rule changes are legitimate.
Each of these rule changes were discussed in the staff IRC channel at their respective dates. Especially the overall GB rule update (from 2018-01-01) had adelikat as an active contributor to the discussion (alongside other judging staff). You may not recall it as you in particular weren't (actively) involved in either, but that doesn't mean that no discussion happened between judges and admins in the proper channels, or that the rules were "being modified unilaterally" by "judges". The logs are right there. (For as good as IRC is at keeping them).

For reference, this started with this submission, from March of 2018. I was the one that accepted it (I was still senior judge at the time). And I remember discussion with various staff members about the movie (and its settings, particularly GBC-in-GBA, and how they interact with the rules) at the time, although I can't say precisely who were and who weren't involved at the time. I was aware of the rules as written for Game Boy modes - in fact, I had written them just a few months before. And in fact, just days before, the rules were in fact updated to allow GBC-in-GBA without the need for special GBA enhancements - this was clearly updated with this method of console verification in mind. The one thing that was overlooked is that Pokémon Blue is a GB game and not a GBC game (unlike Pokémon Yellow), and so the part about enabling GB-in-GBC was (incorrectly) not codified in the rules. It's not like Pokémon games were all that consistent with Game Boy versions, anyway - Pokémon TASes were divided all over the place with GB movies made with the Gambatte core, "SGB" movies made in VBA, and GBC movies for Yellow which were freely cross-obsoleted by Red/Blue on the other systems. At the time, this didn't even look like it would be a controversial change. Console verification is a key aspect of TASVideos, and has been for many years. It is one of the targeted end-results for emulation accuracy, and that is something that has been highly prioritized across TASVideos and its rules for many years. Quite simply, there was (and, in my opinion, is) zero reason to get in the way of console-verified publications for games such as Pokémon, just to stick to the version rules as they were originally written. To me, it was clear that running a Pokémon game in GBC was the optimal platform for it, as it had absolutely negligible downsides from a viewing perspective (no hardware revision-based issues to speak of, just a change in RNG which is invisible to the viewer), it had colorized palettes which provides a better viewing experience overall (and puts it more in line with the older VBA-"SGB" publications, and GBC Pokémon Yellow publications). Now, regarding what should happen today, I reiterate the following points: • GB-in-GBC should be an acceptable choice for Game Boy movies, owing to advantages such as console verification (which is important to us), and general lack of downsides. There's a lot of talk about imperfections across hardware, but in my mind, unless there is demonstrable evidence for a submitted GB game that it has issues in GBC mode (such as what's shown in Alyosha's post, for another game), this should not be grounds for rejecting a movie. And the rules should be updated as such, as they should have been back when the rules were updated in March of 2018, and how they have been de-facto enforced since. • GB games that are run in GBC mode (such as this publication) should be labeled as GB rather than GBC. This is exactly to prevent the issue that brought Nach to this thread to begin with, the fact that it's labeled with a platform that makes it non-intuitive to find.

As far as I'm concerned, Game Boy, Game Boy Color, Game Boy Advance etc. are all official platforms and I fail to see the problem with making use of them in scenarios like this. The only reason this could be in contention is if there are demonstrable and/or visible issues with the game's functioning on GBC and/or GBA.
Nach wrote:
They do not provide a comprehensive list. They made the Gameboy Color have backwards compatibility so it can launch with a large set of available games, this does not mean it runs them all accurately. The backwards compatibility is supposed to work most of the time, but the DMG/SGB games were not designed for this. I've heard that the reason for the various black cartridge rereleases was to put out "fixed" versions of those games because they had various issues on a Gameboy Color. I've specifically heard the Arcade Classics games had sound issues, and certain gameplay changed slightly. Even for the games that seem to run fine, it doesn't mean it's true to the original, and may have subtle differences. Edit: See this thread here, they discuss various issues they know about with certain games on the various Gameboy variants: https://forum.digitpress.com/forum/showthread.php?151903-Problem-gameboy-games-on-Advance
Most examples refer to game being obviously broken in GBA, fail to boot, etc. Obviously, if there are major emulation issues that prevent a game from being ran, we can't even consider running it in GBA mode. For other games, we can still see if there are demonstrable visible or audible issues and reject them on that basis - that doesn't mean we should need to abandon the concept entirely. If there are no demonstrable emulation issues, preventing console verification (itself a pinnacle aspect of emulation accuracy) because it might hypothetically be very slightly different seems absurd. We're running the game on official hardware, that's designed to support it, it works, and the game looks to function as it would on the hardware it was originally designed for. Regarding labeling, I agree games that are originally for GB should be labeled as GB. This isn't even running on GBC, the settings have the core pretend it's a GBA running a GB game. But this is an entirely different problem, one that can both be easily resolved manually, and the movie file parser can be patched to resolve movies like this being read as GBC instead of GB.
