The US civil war was between the north and south, over the issue of slavery. The north wanted slavery abolished, and the south wanted to keep it. It was the bloodiest conflict on US soil ever, lasting 4 years and with over 600,000 deaths. North & South, meanwhile, is a NES game based on the war.

Game objectives

  • Plays back on: FCEUX 2.1.5
  • Emulator originally used: FCEU 0.98.16
  • Plays as North, because they won the real war
  • No deaths
  • Aims for fastest time

Comments

The North's armies are combined in the first move so they don't have to move as far. There are other battlefields than the bridge-and-river seen here, but it just so happens that the battlefields which can be reached quickly follow this design.

Other comments

Battlefields can't be luck-manipulated, but an equally fast path that shows other types of battlefields would be interesting. Improvements of a few frames may be possible, but I doubt anything major could be done. Screenshot suggestion: Frame 4580

adelikat: Bad game for TASing, at least as presented by this submission. Rejecting.

Did you think to test playing as the south to see if they'd get a lower frame count? They did win the very first battle, you know. Also, I'm thinking no vote and no publish for political correctness. But what do I know? I've watched Civil War movies, and wasn't impressed, so ergo, this movie doesn't impress me either right? right?

By playing as the South, and losing as quickly as possible, you achieve the same thing as this movie / real life, right? It'll be cool if you include "Uses death as a shortcut" or something.

There's been hundreds of comments that sports TASes replicate famous games. I won't be satisfied until the entire Civil War is reenacted with 100% accuracy.

The play quality was ok, good job Chamale! However, I'm voting "no", because the hardest difficulty setting was not used. COM level 3 is much harder opponent and might produce a more entertaining result. Right? This is one of the childhood games I played a lot with friends (mostly against each other, which was so fun back then!), so hopefully I know what I'm talking about here.

Umm... I don't really know what to say about this game other than I didn't enjoy watching it at all. Maybe it will have some appeal to people who have played it, but as someone who hasn't, it was dull. Voting no.

Well, if he wanted to be proper, shouldnt the actual run take 4 years?

TASwise, this is the worst game I have seen in quite some time. This needs to be mentioned along with front line. I can't say I enjoyed watching anything about this TAS. (no vote).

I'm surprised I'm the only person who voted yes so far (even though I guess it's pointless now): The horses run off into the water! I'm still laughing now! OK, so I was also confused why the game ended so fast, and kind of disappointed that the two battles were identical (?), but I'm still happy to have seen this, if only to sate my curiosity about this game (and see horses run into a river).

I think this is the first time I've ever neglected to watch a submission, and then changed my mind for the promise of depicted animal cruelty. It was funny, but I have to give it a meh, mainly because it made no sense.

Best NES multiplayer game, 2nd to Trog and maybe Super Mario BROS. 3 :) This TAS sadly doesn't show much about the game lol, no showing what money from the train does, the indian, the boats, taking forts, other battlefields, level 3 armies etc. Also doesn't play on hardest difficulty :/

But it shows horses drowning which makes up for all that. Voted yes again.

It's coming up, buddy! Tell Chamale to make his last push and win the war!

I have made a new submission of this game that improves upon this one by 37 frames! Download it at http://tasvideos.org/submissions/3752.zip , and discuss it at http://tasvideos.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=13451 ! Edit: I've been bested! Because I cannot best my bester, I will make another submission!
