...I genuinely don't think you would've gotten a TAS like this that starts at world 8 accepted on the site at any point in its history, whether it was 2007 or now. If anything I think the site has become more welcoming to users overtime; plenty of TASes that would've been outright rejected on this site for reasons as weak as not being of real games have become acceptable over the past couple years, and judge responses are far more geared towards kindness now than they used to be.

I did some digging and I found the page that I believe used to advise on difficulty choice (it seems to have been culled in the rewrite): https://tasvideos.org/Guidelines/Legacy#SelectYourDifficultyWell Worth noting that these old guidelines do say that easy is acceptable and even recommended in certain instances, and do not ban it. I definitely don't think Assist Mode runs should be disallowed, but it does differ from traditional easy modes in a few ways. I'm inclined to agree with the idea of it being treated as a separate branch.

I'll give you one - Half-Life Source. The game starts with all chapters unlocked immediately from the start. You don't even need to kill the final boss, you can just go straight to the last cutscene and end input there. G-Man still teleports you off to a new fate and credits roll if you do nothing, so there isn't even any gameplay that way, There is also the Sonic 3&K newgame+ example I mentioned earlier, though that isn't exactly any%.

Just to clarify, HappyLee, is your belief that a newgame+ run like this one - [2744] Genesis Sonic 3 & Knuckles "newgame+" by marzojr & Aglar in 27:31.29 - a run that is able to start from whichever zone it likes - should start at the final level instead of the first?

You've shown through your work on SMB1 and 2J over years and years that you have a very sophisticated understanding of the game. When others have submitted TASes, you've found improvements to their work. I have no doubt that you could find a framerule or two to shave off of the existing published TAS. In comparison to that, skipping to the final world via a level select and declaring it a real any% run feels pretty cheap.
