Also, I consider and recognize [2320] SNES Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island "100%" by Baxter, Carl_Sagan & NxCy in 1:59:35.12 really impressive for entertainment tradeoff (lots of cool egg shots) during all of progress! This is worth TAS of the decade for me!
The egg shots aren't actually trade-offs - it's optimal to bounce eggs around until they're red to collect stars from them. The only speed/entertainment tradeoff I know of from that movie is avoiding 1/1 running, because it was deemed to look notably worse in proportion to the small speed gain.

it's also #3 among all current Mega Men: http://tasvideos.org/Movies-Moons-Stars-Group21-RatingE.html
It's obviously a great movie in that regard but I'd like to point out that ratings shouldn't be the decisive factor between what qualifies a movie for this flag - it's important to consider that the audience for this flag is the exact opposite of the audience that actually rates our movies. What's most important is if the movie does a good job of showcasing what TASing can do to a game. Obviously a general level of entertainment helps to make a good picture, but consider what sort of experience it will provide for the newbie user specifically.

For MM related, we could try this: [1925] SNES Mega Man & Bass "100 CDs" by sparky, parrot14gree & woabclf in 38:07.68
While I love this movie, I do feel that the game is a bit more obscure than its NES brethren and those games would better serve as recommended for newcomers than Mega Man & Bass. EDIT: Mega Man X could also be acceptable however.
I don't think MM&B should necessarily be dismissed as 'too obscure'. The game itself isn't massively popular but it's still a traditional Mega Man game (which more people will have familiarity with), and the TAS does a great job at dissecting the game more and more as Mega Man gets more weapons and more zipping/game-breaking techniques to work with. To me it looks like a great showcase of what kinds of things TASes are capable of that are otherwise clearly humanly impossible. NES MM1 and MM2 also are decent picks for the same reason, but I'm not sure if MM2 has as much TAS-"exclusive" content to show off, while MM1 depending on the run type tends to mangle the game beyond all comprehension. I feel like MM&B hits the sweetspot a bit better here. The Mega Man X movies don't really do much of the sort of glitching that these movies do, so that would be a different conversation entirely.

While I also agree Majora’s Mask should be removed from newcomers, does this mean if a new tas for that category shows up, it has a chance of regaining the newcomers flag?
It would be best to re-evaluate this on its own terms when or if such a movie is published. Note that one of the points that this topic was started on is that inheritance of the flag should not be a given, and it should be re-evaluated if a new movie still suits the flag well enough. For now, I do agree with removing the Majora's Mask movie. It's no longer a good representation of what a TAS movie of the game is supposed to be like in the present day.

Celeste is a good pick because it's a much more modern game than almost everything else we have (despite the retro style) and therefore has more mainstream appeal, which is good for newcomers. Magician Lord has kind of the opposite issue, it's a very obscure arcade game and people aren't going to be familiar with it. It's a great movie, but I'm not sure how much it will catch the interest of new people.

Well, there's another idea: Perhaps some kind of "always record" persistent setting, which keeps some kind of buffer of the last hour or so of recording (configurable, of course). A bit like how the PS4 is always recording your gameplay, and keeps the last 10 minutes of so. Thus if something particular happens you can save those last 10 minutes of video capture. (Nvidia, and probably AMD, also support this kind of thing on the PC side.)
openMSX records by default, allowing you to save your replay to file after the fact. I think that could be implemented in other emulators.
lsnes also does this.

Throughout many years of TASing I've accumulated many silly ways of losing work. Fortunately modern emulators are better at avoiding some of these issues, but especially in the times of PCSX-rr, DeSmuME-rr, FBA-rr and so on I've had some funny things happen. - Lose a bit of progress because I pressed the loadstate button instead of savestate - Lose a bit of progress because I did savestate, but then overwrote the savestate with something else - Lose progress because of a desync introduced by having a RAM cheat or RAM freeze enabled while recording - Lose progress because of a desync introduced by a Lua script that poked in RAM to similar effect while recording - Lose progress because while TASing I failed to realize that no movie file was loaded (for emulators that didn't give an obvious indication that a movie file was/wasn't loaded) - Lose progress because I worked from a savestate of an unoptimized testrun instead of the actual run - Lose progress because I worked from a savestate that belonged to a different movie file entirely (this could happen with some old DeSmuME-rr versions if I remember correctly) - Lose progress because I accidentally changed some sync settings (intended for an other run) in the middle of a movie (DeSmuME-rr again) - Lose a day of work because I didn't bother running the movie file to verify sync, and the movie desynced immediately near the start due to some obscure loadstate bug - Lose a couple days of work because the emulator crashed and corrupted the movie file mid-crash (thanks PCSX-rr) - Lose several days of work because the entire hard drive crashed and the movie file could not be recovered (make external backups often, people) - Not make any progress at all for a day because FBA-rr decided it is Guru Meditation day (randomly crashed every minute) Fun times.

DoS all souls is a great example of an action-heavy completionist run that uses a ton of luck manipulation and routing to collect all the souls the game has to offer. PoR all bosses differs in that it isn't really completionist (it goes through most of the game, but defeating all bosses is a more arbitrary goal) but features a lot faster paced action, occasional out-of-bounds/zipping tricks, a crazy route going all over the place, and rapid demolishing of every major enemy or boss. For me, PoR all bosses is one of my favorite movies on the whole site, although DoS all souls is probably a bit easier to follow for most users and the goal itself is more noteworthy. EDIT: [3216] GBA Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow "all souls" by Fz-Last, klmz, Pike in 17:06.41 is already starred- it has the same goal/general idea as DoS, but is a GBA game instead of DS.

Authors can choose not to get credited themselves for a work for any reason if they so please. It's not the same as the other movie you are referring to, where the submitter chose not to include someone else's name. Besides that, I would not go into any debate on authorship based on presumptions of whose input is who's. That is what caused the whole mess last time.

I submitted the previous movie as branchless (any%) fully aware of how the glitch worked. feos did not know and mis-assumed how it worked at first, but he did not touch the branch name, to my knowledge. As for the branch name itself, it depends on how you define "the most common way to play a game". In terms of TAS publications, it's 1 each, so that doesn't help anything. Speedrunners of the game also call this category "any%", while the other is called "any% no death abuse". Speedrun.com also has single world categories (titled "World 1", etc.) that allow death abuse. So, there isn't any defined consensus, in speedrunning terms, that the deathless category is the "common" way. I don't currently see a reason to deviate from the current branch labels.

I would see it as being more open-ended than just taking the award winners of every year, as some TASes might have aged better than others. Perhaps an older movie that didn't impress quite as much at the time could be rated higher today. I've already seen a few movies like that mentioned in this topic.

This thread has gone nowhere and there's still no real evidence of copied/modified input in the submission, so locking. My apologies to TASeditor for implicating him in my first post on the topic - I acted rashly, without having full information. That was a mistake on my part.
