In which are listed movies of yester-yore, each seeking to entertain in its own fashion.

This started out as a personal opinion piece, but I'm not the final word and I'd like to hear what you say. Feel free to add to the list.
This movie introduced a lot of people to TASing. It was made before the days of Frame Advance, Memory Watch and other things we take for granted. Despite that, it is only about 30 seconds out of 11 minutes slower than the current publication. For a full history of this game, see SMB3TASHistory.

This is a historic movie, submitted and obsoleted before the creation of the database-based (and wiki-based) site engine, before July 2004. It was inserted into the database for a history revival project by Bisqwit in autumn 2006.
When this video was first released on the Internet in mid-2003, its incredible quality of play became a phenomenon; since few people knew how the video was made, it was widely believed that it was played in real-time by an extremely skilled player. When Morimoto detailed the making of the run on his website (which can still be read here), many felt deceived and turned to criticizing the video's "illegitimacy" instead. During this time, the concept of tool-assistance was still mostly unknown, and people even went as far as claiming that Morimoto had constructed the movie in several years' time by performing video editing on every single frame of the WMV.
While this video was not the first of its kind, it was the first to gain widespread interest, and contributed greatly to the popularity of speedruns in general.

A Boy and His Blob: Trouble on Blobolonia (1989) is a popular, whimsical game in which a shapeshifting blob (named Blobert) from the planet Blobolonia teams up with an Earth boy to overcome obstacles on both planets and to defeat Blobolonia's evil emperor.
This movie is 13 seconds faster than the previous version by TheAxeMan. The most noticeable improvements are:
  1. A new technique that allows the boy to walk on air.
  2. A small improvement to the placement of the first hole.
To quote hopper's comments: This continues to be the weirdest TAS on the site.

Ever wonder if Mario was actually a ninja wearing blue overalls? Now you know.
This run completes the game after collecting a mere 16 stars. It was originally intended that the player collect a minimum of 70 to finish, but a few bugs allow Mario to pass through doors and barriers that require a minimum number of stars to open. This is also used when unlocking a door would take longer than setting up and executing the bug.
Mario has a very wide range of skills for mobility and some of the physics of this game are easily abused by an experienced player.
This version of Super Mario 64 changes the route of the previous runs.

Ultra fast bouncing around. Completed without collecting any emeralds, with Sonic alone. The use of Sonic's different shields makes for some very interesting acrobatics.
We recommend reading the author comments of this movie.
This movie probably has the highest rerecord count (118,631) of all the movies of this site at the time of writing. Most of it was recorded at 6% speed, which at the time of publication was considered nearly frame by frame. All of the jumps appear to be extremely precise.



Someone playing MegaRockMan well and exploiting a couple of cool glitches, as opposed to someone breaking it's physics entirely:

Loses no energy. Uses all the weapons, tools and glitches creatively. Very nice.
Rockman is known as Mega Man in the rest of world. It sometimes happens that names change when things are imported to USA.

This is a hack of Super Mario Bros. called Air, available here (website in Japanese).
Defining aspects of this game:
  • Very unforgiving. Intuition will not work. Mistakes are not allowed. Most paths are one-way.
  • In order to complete the game, the player is required to collect some mushrooms, only to lose them soon thereafter.
  • In order to complete the game, the player is required to abuse many of the glitches of the game (such as passing through walls in a multitude of different ways).
  • Savestates are practically required for completing the game.
  • You can jump any time you wish, even if you are in air. Genisto however avoids using this feature except when necessary.
  • This movie involves a death. As the game starts with 0 extra lifes, the player must gain one 1UP to afford that death.
  • In stage 3-2, Mario just sleepwalks through the stage. The player has no control there.
If you want to complete this game yourself, do not watch this movie!
This movie spoils some solutions.
Anyone can make as psychedelic looking hack as this one is, but it is not as mindless as it first seems. It has been designed by someone who has firm knowledge of the game's quirks, and you need to have the same level of knowledge in order to complete the game.
Gaining the 1UP is accomplished by collecting 100 coins. However, most of the coins are either hidden, or trapped so that they must be collected in a certain order. Some coins are traps in themselves, and must not be collected, because doing so the player would not be able to return to the right path.
The death, however, is not mandatory. As Bisqwit demonstrates, the game is also completable without death (and thus, without collecting those coins).
(Note: The shooting at Koopa in the demonstration has nothing to do with this point. It only shows that the hit counter overflowed.)
Bisqwit is unsure whether this manner of completion is what the creator of the hack had in mind. Considering that dying leads to the lowerside tunnel, it is possible that the death was intended to be mandatory.
Genisto has explained some aspects of this game, and of the movie, in his submission comments.
The following attributes apply to this movie:
  • Abuses programming errors. There is no other choice.
  • Uses warps. There is no other choice.
  • Does not play as fast as possible. Rather, Genisto introduces this hack in a good way.
