Dragster, released in 1980 for the Atari 2600, is the first video game developed by Activision. It was programmed by David Crane, who later wrote Pitfall! The object of the game is to either beat the player's opponent across the screen, or to race against the clock for best time, depending on the settings used.
The game is well known as having the first console speedrun with the world record of 5.51 by Todd Rogers in 1982 according to Twin Galaxies. This record is known as the oldest, unbeaten world record in all of speedrunning. Omnigamer decided to try and match the elusive 5.51, and disassembled the entire game looking for how the 5.51 was achieved. After conducting his research, Omnigamer found that the long sought 5.51 was impossible to achieve within the conditions of the game, putting into doubt the veracity of the record of Todd Rogers.
Instead, this run achieves the fastest possible time of 5.57 on player one, with player two completing the track in the lowest amount of input frames.

MrWint & Omnigamer decided to try and match the elusive 5.51, and disassembled the entire game looking for how the 5.51 was achieved. After conducting their research, they found that the long sought 5.51 was outright impossible to achieve within the internal conditions of the game. It also improves the predecessor movie by 00:00.10 seconds, which translates to 00:00.02 seconds if you discard emulation differences. The improvement comes from the fact that the game processes the second player first, so he's the one taking the lead this time.

Otocky was created by Toshio Iwai in 1987 and was only released in Japan for the Famicom Disk System. It is best described as a musical side-scrolling shoot 'em up where the primary weapon is a ball which, when fired in one of eight directions, plays different musical notes on the primary instrument quantized to the beat of the background music.
Needless to say, when such a weapon is put into the hands of a tool-assisted speedrunner, you might just find yourself humming along to the end result.

This game is Super Mario Bros., the original, but on the Famicom Disk System. It is much similar to the ROM version of the game, except for one minor difference that is demonstrated here.
The -1 stage is completely different. In the NES and Unisystem versions, the -1 stage repeats infinitely and cannot be completed, but in FDS, it can be completed, and then come -2 and -3.
The -3 stage in FDS is a castle level, and completing it ends the game, even though it says "princess is in another castle". The princess is not seen in the ending, but she is sighted twice in the -1 stage, as shown in this movie.
This movie is 84 frames faster than the previous one due to the use of a "cheap trick".

Battletoads is a classic video game by Rare for the NES, but different versions of the game were also made for many other systems, such as the Genesis and the Game Boy. All of these games are known for their comical animation style (such as gigantic fists and boots when the toads attack) and their high difficulty, essentially requiring the player to memorize the upcoming dangers to react fast enough to survive.
In this version, the player plays as the Battletoad Zitz on a quest to rescue the other two Toads, Rash and Pimple, from the Dark Queen. This game has only 9 stages, as opposed to 12 in the NES version. However, unlike the NES version of the game, there are no warps, and there is no two-player option. There are also fewer time-saving glitches. That doesn't stop Lobsterzelda, though, from beating up tons of enemies and completing the game very quickly.

The Game Boy series is a little different from the NES series in that there are only four Robot Masters to fight at the start. Those four are borrowed from the NES game of the same number, while four more Robot Masters from the next NES game guard Dr. Wily’s fortress. Game Boy Wily also likes to have a backup fortress in space after his first one is beaten. Another recurring concept in the Game Boy games is a ninth robot boss unique to the game who gives you a new weapon that is usually the only weapon effective against the final boss.

Tower of Hanoi is a puzzle game that dates back to 1883 at the very least when French mathematician Édouard Lucas brought the game to the West. With three rods and a tower of discs on a rod at one end, the goal of the game is to get all of the discs to the rod at the other end while following these rules: 1.) Only one disk may be moved at a time, which then has to be placed on top of another stack or on an empty rod, 2.) No disk may be placed on top of a disk that is smaller than it.

This movie of Sonic Advance is unique as a speedrun in one aspect: Sonic moves so fast that the "camera" of the game cannot even follow him. Therefore, he is rarely seen in the movie.
On the rare occasions we get to watch Sonic, we get to enjoy seeing him moving through walls, charging up for another dash, or making short work of bosses.
Besides the super fast speed itself, the speed also provides Sonic an ability (glitch) to pass through platforms and walls under certain conditions.
While this movie appears to be around 3 seconds slower than the previous movie, it is in fact faster. This is due to more accurate emulation and also including the GBA boot sequence.

Through strategic use of save-and-restore and a glitch allowing rapid diagonal movement and zipping, Wario gets away with all the loot in this S-Hard mode run by Reseren, which is a difficulty mode that's unlocked after beating the game on Hard mode. Pokémon Trading Card Game is the video game incarnation of the popular Pokémon Trading Card Game (Pokémon TCG). It features digital versions of the first three sets of real-life trading cards, along with exclusive cards that are not available outside of the game. Normal gameplay involves finding and battling other trainers and Masters, eventually becoming the Champion and earning the Legendary Cards.
However, the author instead decided to glitch out the first battle and confuse the game into reading deck contents as code. This allows the author to reach the game's credits in just under 3 minutes. For more information, see the authors' comments.

Rockman DX3, also known as Zook Hero 2, is an unlicensed pirate game developed by Vast Fame that rips gameplay off the Rockman X series. Just like Rockman X, there are eight stages, and six of them contain a boss who gives you his weapon upon defeat. The protagonist, Zook, also has abilities nearly identical to those of X. Despite these similarities, the code and graphics appear to be completely original and the music is actually decent.
Unlike the other run of this game, this run uses a release that doesn't have all stages unlocked from the start, which means all bosses must be defeated and all upgrades obtained first before Zook can tackle the final stages.

Madou Monogatari (魔導物語) is an RPG best described as 'strange' (and probably more known for its spinoff series, Puyo Puyo). The game has overly cute design and the battles are probably a little different than you would expect. The story revolves around a girl who is on a quest to pass her final exam in a magic school.
A defining moment is one of the cutscenes, where a slime is encountered and suddenly defeated by a strange girl bursting through a brick wall. Then, an equally strange armored knight drops in from the ceiling and the two of them proceed to ignore you and chase each other away.
The fast completion time is achieved mostly by using a random-effect spell, which has a small chance of producing a devastating elephant stomp (yeah, really). Naturally, in a TAS, the "small chance" gets a new meaning.

Adventures of Lolo (1989) was the first game of the Eggerland series that received a Western release. Interestingly, the series was developed by HAL Laboratory, who also created the Kirby series, and Eggerland protagonists Lolo and Lala make cameo appearances in Kirby games as Lololo and Lalala.
The goal of the game is to collect all of the hearts in every stage and then get the ball from the chest to open the door to the next room. Though it may seem simplistic, it remains a truly well-made puzzle. Finding optimal solutions to most of the rooms has proven to be a very nontrivial task, and every once in a while a new improvement is found.

Air 2 is a ROM hack of Super Mario Bros. by U1 and a revision of the ROM hack Air, which was also created by the same author. It is a puzzle-oriented ROM hack which requires knowledge of Super Mario Bros. glitches in order to solve. What makes Air 2 different from Air is that it lacks the infinite jumps feature Air had and all hidden blocks are marked at the start.
Compared to the previous run, Asumeh decides to go for pure speed and completion time instead of demonstrating what the hack has to offer, using clipping glitches to bypass intended solutions and save almost two minutes of game time.

Alter Ego is an NES homebrew port of a ZX Spectrum puzzle game of the same name. You control a character who can switch places with his shadow a limited number of times in each stage. The goal is to collect all the items without touching any enemies. To further complicate matters, the blue-outlined items can only be collected by the shadow, whereas the pink-outlined items can only be collected by the main player.
This hardly stops aiqiyou, though, who barely avoids death in a number of puzzles and finishes in record time, while also improving the previous movie by 00:05.44 seconds.

Alwa's Awakening: The 8-Bit Edition is an official NES demake of the PC game Alwa's Awakening that was co-developed by the developers of the original game. While Alwa's Awakening was a throwback to the 8-bit era of video games with its retro-esque gameplay and graphics, the NES version is a full-on port to an 8-bit video game console. And unlike most demakes, this version retains most of the levels of the PC version along with adding exclusive content.
Darkman425 forgoes the use of screen wrapping and out of bounds glitches in this run that would save over 20 minutes of game time in favor of playing the the game mostly inbounds. Other glitches are still used to save time along with soft resets. You can read the author's notes for more details.
